Large, neotenic salamander reaching 8 inches in length. Four toes on each hind foot. Brown dorsum with small, black spots. Black spots on brown venter in adults. Pronounced dorsal fin. Blood-red gills present in both larvae and adults. Primarily prey upon crawfish. Inhabit larger streams where they live under logs, vegetation, and stones or in burrows. Species occurs in two disjunct populations—the streams of the Florida Parishes near the Mississippi River, Pearl River and Lake Pontchartrain drainages and in the drainages of the Sabine and Calcasieu Rivers in western Louisiana.
