Southern two-lined salamander (Eurycea cirrigera)

Small, secretive, yellow to pale orange salamander reaching a maximum length of 3.88 inches. Dark stripe runs down each side from eye to tail. Dorsum is covered in small, dark specks. Males have cirri, which become pronounced during mating season. Each lower side has a row of circular spots and mottled appearance. Courtship and spermatophore production occur in the fall. Larval period may last up to 2 years. Aquatic as larvae and terrestrial as adults. Individuals forage at night and prey on both terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates. Species occurs in southeastern Louisiana bottomlands, ravine seepages and small brooks where individuals are found under debris at water’s edge.
