Guide to Louisiana Amphibians |
Dark brown to black, medium-sized salamander ranging from 4.5 to 5 inches in length. Extremely variable gray markings on dorsum and sides that resemble lichen. Venter is similar in coloration to dorsum, but the markings are not as pronounced. The head is small in relation to body. Breeds in late winter in isolated wetlands. Females lay eggs in shallow water and usually affix eggs to sticks and vegetation under water. Individuals are commonly found hiding in crawfish burrows. A. texanum will hybridize with A. tigrinum and A. laterale. A. laterale does not occur in Louisiana, but occurs in other parts of A. texanum's range. Species occurs throughout the state. Most commonly found in wet woodlands. Species found in coastal marshes, but only where oak-pine hammocks exist.
