Spotted, medium-sized frog reaching a maximum length of 3.44 inches. Dorsum ranges from gray to tan in coloration and is covered in square brown or black spots arranged in two adjacent rows. Dorsolateral ridges run all the way down the dorsum. Ventral surface is yellow or orange in coloration. Light spot absent on tympanum. Hind feet are webbed. Generates a skin secretion that is irritating to the skin, eyes, nose, and mouth of some people. Mating occurs between early February and April. The call resembles a low, deep snoring sound and is often confused with R. sphenocephala. Females lay 2,000 to 3,000 eggs in spherical clusters that are submerged and attached to vegetation. Species occurs in upland areas in northern Louisiana and pine forests in the southern part of the State.
