Large frog that is similar to R. catesbeiana, but only reaching 6.38 inches in length. Dorsum ranges from blackish brown to olive to copper-green. Ventral surface is white to yellow in coloration and generally is covered in dark mottling. Dorsolateral ridges run down three-quarters of the back and encircle part of the tympanum (eardrum). Head is pointed. Toes are extensively webbed on the hind feet. Males call from mid-February to mid-August. Call sounds like the grunt of a pig. Females lay 8,000 to 15,000 eggs in a film usually attached to vegetation on the water’s surface. Each egg is enveloped in a gelatinous membrane. Species occurs in the lowlands of the lower third of the State.
