Bronze frog (Rana clamitans)

Very common, medium-sized frog reaching a maximum length of 3.5 inches. Dorsum ranges from brown to bronze with randomly placed dark spots. Dorsolateral ridges run down three-quarters of the back. Ventral surface is generally white. Toes are extensively webbed. Males call from mid-March to early September. Call resembles the sound made by plucking an out-of-tune banjo. Males are very territorial. Females lay 1,000 to 3,000 eggs in a film on the water’s surface amongst vegetation or in the open water. Species occurs throughout the State in all types of freshwater habitat.
