Small, stocky frog reaching a maximum of 1.45 inches in length. Toe discs are small and only slightly larger than toes. Dorsum ranges from reddish brown to green to silvery gray. A dark triangular spot is sometimes present between the eyes, and most individuals have a dark mask covering the eyes. Groin is yellow. Males call from December to early-February. Voice is a loud peep similar to the sound made by a hammer hitting a chisel. Breeds in winter in shallow, clear wetlands with grassy margins in pine-oak forests or in murky, shallow pools of water bordered by sphagnum moss. Females lay eggs in clusters composed of 6 to 100 eggs and attach clusters to twigs in the water. Rarely seen when not breeding, so might be fossorial. Species occurs in Washington and St. Tammany Parish in ditches, flooded meadows, pine barren ponds, and cypress swamps.
