Bird-voiced treefrog (Hyla avivoca)

Medium-sized treefrog reaching 2 inches in snout-vent length. Skin is relatively smooth. Dorsum color varies from brown to gray to green. Irregular, dark markings on the dorsum. Light spot below each eye. Calls from April to mid-August, although males documented “talking” up to three weeks prior to calling. Call is beautiful and often mistaken as a bird calling, hence the name. Call is a series of rapidly repeated whistles. Females lay up to 600 eggs in packets containing 6-12 eggs each. Packets are attached to submerged vegetation or the bottom of a pool of water. Species occurs in forested areas and swampy floodplains of bigger rivers in southeastern, central and northeastern Louisiana.
