Secretive, small, round toad with short limbs and a pointed head. Distinct fold of skin across the back of the head is suggested to aid in foraging on termites, ants, and small beetles. Toes are unwebbed. Most males have a dark throat patch whereas females predominately have light throat patches. Dorsum is gray, brown, or red in coloration and frog may alter color depending on climate and actions. Broad mid-dorsal stripe is bordered by lighter stripes. Dorsum sometimes has patches or spots which may obscure the stripes. Call sounds like the noise made by a lamb or an electric buzzer and lasts up to 4 seconds. Breeds in shallow pools of water from April to October. Habitats must be well sheltered and moist but often have little else in common. Species occurs throughout the State.
