Educational Opportunities Available for Students and Teachers
at the National Wetlands Research Center
- Acadiana Migratory Bird Day. This celebration of the
annual return of migratory birds takes place each April. Activities are designed to increase awareness of the
importance of these neotropical migrants and their habitats.
- Field trips, educational programs, tours of the Center. We can
tailor a visit to the Center to meet your students' science, math, geography, or computer curriculum needs.
- Homepage: Visit our web site at http://www.nwrc.usgs.gov. Watch for development of the education resources page.
- Internships, mentorships, volunteer work, and workshops.
Occasionally these opportunities are available at NWRC for K - 12 teachers.
- Publications. Staff members are often involved in writing projects
that help synthesize research issues and findings for general audiences.

- Seminar series. Respected researchers/scientists from Louisiana and
around the world are scheduled to speak on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 2:00 - 3:00 pm in the Center conference room. The public is invited, although the content is usually highly technical.
- Speakers. Have scientists come into your classroom and share their
work with your students or serve as judges for your science fair.
- Career days. Contact Susan Hoover at susan_hoover@usgs.gov or 337/266-8517 for an exhibit or presentation at your high school or college career day.
- Information resources. Use the Center library and educational vertical
file to help you plan a study unit on wetlands, ecology, endangered species
